TAMPA, Fla. — The Lightning are going to the playoffs, and they know the set of teams they’ll have to get past to return to the Stanley Cup Final. But they only have a few games left to round into postseason form.

There was plenty to like out of the Lightning’s 4-3 loss to the Red Wings on Tuesday night at Amalie Arena. They had a terrific start and rallied, but ultimately committed too many costly turnovers that led to scoring opportunities on the other end.

A Spanish court has lifted measures that shielded the clubs that want to create a European Super League competition from being punished by UEFA and FIFA. The court says even if the clubs are punished it would not impede them from going forward with the plan to create a breakaway competition beyond UEFA's control. Spanish teams Real Madrid and Barcelona and Italian team Juventus still openly back the Super League's creation. The ruling can be appealed. A different Spanish judge issued the protection for the clubs a year ago amid threats of their possible banishment from the Champions League.

Manchester United has hired Erik ten Hag as its fifth manager in nine years. The Dutchman is leaving his role at Ajax at the end of the season. Ten Hag has signed a contract to 2025. His task is to bring back the successes not seen at United since the retirement of Alex Ferguson in 2013 when the club won the last of its record 20 English titles. United has been led by two interim managers — Michael Carrick and currently Ralf Rangnick — since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November. Ten Hag faces a big rebuilding job at United. The team has slipped way behind rivals Manchester City and Liverpool despite the club continuing to spend heavily on players.

NEW YORK — This was Phil Jackson in his 2015 message to Knicks season ticket holders:

Break out the trumpets, pitch the confetti and drop the balloons. It's celebration time in Big Blue Country. The news Kentucky basketball fans were hoping to hear — dare we say, expecting to hear — came Wednesday with a thunderous clap.

CHICAGO — Blustery, cold weather Tuesday afternoon did not stop Chicago Cubs pitcher Marcus Stroman from partaking in his regular between-starts routine during batting practice before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Wrigley Field.

BALTIMORE — The sound was satisfying, a pop that confirmed both the location and the velocity were on point. Grayson Rodriguez would hear that pop again and again, throwing pitch after pitch through the flap of the homemade strike zone target his father had built.

MEXICO CITY — Ian Tarazona’s black helmet is so big it looks like an upside-down satellite dish, and his oversized hockey sweater hangs to his knees. But don’t let appearances fool you. Ian is a terror on the ice.

Like most any boy growing up in Mobile, Walker Hayes’ early goal in his sporting career was obvious. Star at Alabama and then be drafted into the NFL. While it hasn’t quite worked out that way for the country music singer/songwriter, he’s found the No. 1 overall draft pick of his profession. Hayes, who will appear in concert in Las Vegas on Saturday night, five days before the draft kicks off in town, had the megahit of 2021 with “Fancy Like.” The song not only crushed it on the charts and through every music medium, it also launched a dance craze thanks to a TikTok he and daughter Lela concocted. Hayes’ mention of Applebee’s restaurant in the lyrics basically made his song part of the menu.

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin enjoyed the biggest moment of his career inside T-Mobile Arena in 2018, when he skated the Stanley Cup around the rink after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in the Final. On Wednesday night he enjoyed another milestone. With two goals during a 4-3 overtime loss to the Knights, it marked the ninth time in Ovechkin’s career he scored 50 goals, tying Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for most in NHL history.

Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera needs one more hit for 3,000 in his career, and will try to reach the mark at Comerica Park. Cabrera added three more hits to his total Wednesday night in a 5-3 loss to the Yankees. With fans standing and cheering while hoping to see history, he struck out in his final at-bat. Cabrera is on deck to become the 33rd major leaguer with 3,000 hits, and the first player from Venezuela to achieve the feat. The 39-year-old Cabrera gets his next chance when Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery faces Detroit in an afternoon matchup.

The Phoenix Suns visit the New Orleans Pelicans for game three of the Western Conference first round with the series tied 1-1. The teams meet for the seventh time this season. New Orleans is 25-27 against the Western Conference, and Phoenix is 39-13 against conference opponents.

The Miami Heat visit the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference first round with a 2-0 lead in the series. The teams meet for the seventh time this season. Atlanta is 9-7 against the Southeast Division, and Miami is 13-3 against division opponents.

The Chicago Bulls host the Milwaukee Bucks in game three of the Eastern Conference first round with the series tied 1-1. The teams meet for the eighth time this season. Chicago is 10-6 against the Central Division, and Milwaukee is 12-4 against division opponents.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Khris Middleton’s status for the rest of his team’s first-round playoff series with the Chicago Bulls is uncertain after the three-time All-Star left Wednesday’s Game 2 with a knee injury. Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said after Milwaukee’s 114-110 loss that Middleton has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Budenholzer said Middleton will undergo an MRI on Thursday. The best-of-7 series is tied 1-all heading into Friday’s Game 3 in Chicago.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Shea Theodore scored 2:09 into overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

MILWAUKEE — DeMar DeRozan is a man of his word. He proved that to Chicago Bulls fans Wednesday night, devouring the Milwaukee Bucks defense in the second half to cement a 114-110 win that evened the first-round playoff series at a game apiece.
