JACKSON, MI – This year’s Tunnel to Towers 5K honoring 9/11 first responders was a little rainier that most would like.

Here is that headline and some more you might have missed this week.

First responders honored at rainy Tunnel to Towers 5K in Jackson

The rain came down and it came down hard.

It wasn’t what Jan Ganzel had in mind for the sixth Tunnel to Towers 5K on Saturday morning, May 21 at Cascade Falls Park in Jackson. But Ganzel, the event coordinator, made the best of it.

“The rain was not fun,” Ganzel said. “But you know, someone brought it up as a metaphor for what happened on 9/11.”

1 dead, 1 critically injured in double stabbing in Jackson

A woman is dead, a man is critically injured and another man was arrested in a reported double stabbing in Summit Township early Monday morning.

Police were called at 6:10 a.m. May 23, to a home in the 2000 block of Carlton Boulevard for a report of multiple stabbing victims at the residence, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived to find two stabbing victims, a 26-year-old man and a, 21-year-old woman, both of Jackson County, and rushed the pair to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital for emergency medical treatment, police said.

Jackson High graduation rescheduled due to expected inclement weather

With inclement weather in the forecast for Friday, May 27, Jackson Public Schools has decided to move its commencement ceremony to Saturday.

The ceremony will now take place at 10 a.m. May 28, at Withington Stadium, Superintendent Jeff Beal said. Seniors are expected to arrive at 8 a.m. for a panoramic photo inside the stadium.

Due to ongoing construction, the JHS fieldhouse was not an option for an indoor graduation ceremony, Beal said.

Man charged in shooting death of Hillsdale County teen

A Hillsdale County man has been charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy in Somerset Township.

Kirk Culik, of Hillsdale County, faces charges of homicide open murder and felony firearms stemming from the death of the boy on May 21. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Tax incentives give boost to new Jackson apartment development

The Greenwood took another step closer to development in the form of tax incentives from the city of Jackson.

The Jackson City Council unanimously approved of a PILOT program for the new proposed apartment complex during its Tuesday, May 24 meeting.

PILOT -- payment in lieu of taxes -- reduces the tax liability on the developer in exchange for a 6% portion of the rents generated from the property, which will go toward the city’s general tax revenue and typically funds parks, streets and other city facilities.

Jackson woman gets 18-30 years in third resentencing for fatal stabbing

Dawn Dixon-Bey is set to spend at least 18 years in prison after being sentenced Wednesday for the third time for a 2015 murder.

Dixon-Bey fatally stabbed her boyfriend, Gregory Stack, 49, twice in the heart on Feb. 14, 2015. A jury found her guilty of second-degree murder in 2015, for which she was sentenced by Jackson Circuit Judge John McBain to spend 35 to 70 years in prison, exceeding the suggested guideline sentence of 12 to 20 years.

Brooklyn man killed in crash with tree

A Brooklyn man was killed Sunday morning in a crash with a tree in Lenawee County.

Rescue crews were called at 4:09 a.m. May 22 to the area of U.S. 12 and Sharon Hollow Road in Franklin Township for a reported single-vehicle crash with injuries, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office.

Family of fatal Jackson County crash victim files wrongful death lawsuit

A lawsuit alleging wrongful death in a crash that killed a Horton man and his dog has been filed in Jackson County court.

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed on April 25 on behalf of the family of Kory C. Wittman II, who was killed along with his dog on March 19 when they were hit by a car while walking in Blackman Township.

It’s a 30-minute trip for groceries, and Jackson’s southside is begging for a closer store

While a trip to the grocery store may be an easy task for some in Jackson, it’s a struggle for those living on the southside.

Residents in other parts of the city have access to Aldi, Meijer, Kroger or Walmart, all within a short drive, or even walking distance. But those on the southside aren’t as lucky, Jackson resident LaWanna Brown, 69, said.

“You should have a grocery store close by,” Brown said. “For a city with a population for 30,000 people, how many of those people live in this area that don’t have a grocery store?”

Jackson’s new ALDI store is opening soon

Discount supermarket chain ALDI is opening the doors to its new Jackson store next week.

The new store in the former Kroger, 3021 E. Michigan Ave., will open at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 2. The space has been vacant since Kroger closed the location for financial reasons in 2018.

Restructuring will create a leadership change at Jackson County Health Department

The Jackson County Health Department will have a new look in its leadership this year.

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners approved a restructuring of the health department during its Tuesday, May 17 meeting to create two deputy health officer positions to help better run the department, Health Officer Kristin Pluta said.

New agreement to install solar power at Jackson elementary schools

Jackson Public Schools has approved a new proposal to bring solar energy systems to three of its elementary schools that will provide more savings to the district.

JPS’ Board of Education approved moving forward with a proposal from CLS Sustainable, Inc., during its meeting on May 17, that would install solar energy systems at Hunt, Dibble and John R. Lewis elementary schools.

Although the school board previously approved a similar 20-year agreement with U.S. Global Energy to conduct the same project scope a year ago, the contract was never executed, Superintendent Jeff Beal said.
