On the second floor of 1930s building in Paris’s 10th arrondissement, designer and architect Hugo Toro’s apartment fits a world of texture and color into a 323-square-foot layout. Renovated in 2018 by the Franc0-Mexican designer, the compact space consists of a living room, an open kitchen, a bedroom with a closet, and a bathroom—all furnished with custom pieces designed by Hugo, as well as vintage and contemporary objects from different eras and destinations, including Mexico and France.

Designer and architect Hugo Toro renovated his 323-square-foot Parisian apartment in 2018. The kitchen features deep red–painted walls, lacquered wood floors, and rounded cabinets made from Macassar ebony with brass edges and Rainforest stone countertops.

Throughout the apartment, Hugo focused on two colors: red and green, referencing the rich color palettes of renowned Mexican creatives such as painter Diego Rivera and architect Luis Barragán. Sections of the living room and bedroom walls are covered with an aluminum veneer, which Hugo designed to evoke the concept of traveling with an atmosphere reminiscent of an old train or boat.

Hugo designed an L-shaped sofa with emerald-green velvet fabric by Pierre Frey in the living room. A coffee table by French designer Hélène de Saint Lager stands on top of a Moroccan rug near a Memphis-style marble table from the 1980s.

In the main living space, an open kitchen features rounded Macassar ebony cabinets with brass edges and Rainforest stone countertops. On the red-painted wall between the kitchen and bathroom, the Parisian designer added a small porthole as a nod to French architect Charlotte Perriand.

The designer chose a deep-red paint color for the main living area and a pale-green hue for the bedroom. Sections of the walls throughout the unit are covered with an aluminum veneer.

Hugo also crafted a velvet sofa for the living room with emerald-green fabric by Pierre Frey and brass formwork that matches the detailing on the kitchen cabinets. Lacquered parquet floors made from solid natural oak connect the kitchen and living area to the bedroom, which is painted with Lichen green by Farrow & Ball.

The custom bed and closet, designed by Hugo, are made from mahogany and natural cane.

The Alualéatoure chair by Hélène de Saint Lager serves as a nightstand with a pink ceramic lamp by Entler Studio.

During the renovation, Hugo installed new, double-glazed windows for optimal sound and thermal insulation. He also soundproofed the floor and ceiling with acoustic screeds. The colorful unit now features an integrated sound system that can be controlled using a mobile app, as well as a retractable TV screen and centrally controlled lighting. Hugo designed the Breccia Parma stone stink in the bathroom, which is combined with a wicker mirror, mahogany furniture, and an onyx soap holder from Mexico.

Brass formwork on the living room sofa matches the detailing on the kitchen cabinets.

Hugo Toro’s apartment in Paris, France, is currently listed for €410,000 (roughly $462,234 USD) by Architecture de Collection.
